Am I a candidate for dental implants?

If you are in good general health, have healthy gums and have enough bone in the jaw to hold an implant, these are the ideal circumstances for the placement of a successful dental implants.

What if I do not have enough bone?

In many instances, patients do not have adequate bone to allow for a dental implant to fuse to the jaw. If you have worn dentures for many years, or have lived with missing teeth over a long period of time, your bone starts to naturally diminish over time. A bone graft is a way of adding new bone to your jawbone.

Bone grafts can be obtained either from donor bone, or from your own bone, depending on your comfort level and the amount of bone required. If a bone graft is required, this will typically be placed first and allowed to heal for a period of 3-6 months, after which the implant insertion is scheduled. Once your bone has fused with or grown onto the surface of the implant, a dental crown attached to the implant, can be made by your dentist or prosthodontist.

What does dental implant surgery consist of?

During the first stage of surgery, Dr. Blair Dalgliesh will put a dental implant into your jawbone beneath the gum tissue. The gum tissue is then stitched back into place. As the tissue heals, the implant will bond with the bone and attach to the gum. The healing process can take several months to heal.

During the second stage of surgery and once the tissue has healed, an abutment will be attached to your dental implant. An abutment is a post that connects your new artificial tooth to the implant.

In some cases, an immediate implant can be placed at the time of tooth extraction, shortening treatment time and allowing an immediate temporary crown to be placed. This needs a certain amount of planning with you and your dentist. We will take care of all the arrangements.
